Living in River North for 1–6 Months: A Furnished-Apartment Guide
October 13, 2026

If your next assignment puts you in downtown Chicago for a few months, River North is one of the easiest places to land. You're across the river from the Loop, close to the Merchandise Mart and Michigan Avenue, and surrounded by restaurants, galleries and offices. For a 1–6 month stay, that means a short commute, groceries within walking distance and no real need for a car. Here's a practical look at living in River North on a temporary assignment, and at the furnished apartments Pinnacle Furnished Suites offers there.
Why River North Works for a 1–6 Month Stay
River North started as an industrial and warehouse district. Today it's one of the city's busiest mixed-use neighborhoods: high-rise apartments next to converted lofts, office towers, art galleries, boutiques and a long list of restaurants. A few things make it a strong fit for relocating professionals, consultants and project teams:
It's central. The Loop is just across the Chicago River. The Merchandise Mart, home to many design and tech offices, sits on the neighborhood's southern edge, and the Magnificent Mile is a short walk east.
It's walkable. Every River North building we list shows a Walk Score of 95 to 100 on its building page.
It's a real neighborhood. You'll find everyday errands, gyms, parks and the Riverwalk alongside the nightlife, so it feels like home and not a hotel district.

Getting Around Without a Car
River North has strong CTA 'L' coverage on both its west and east sides:
Brown Line: Merchandise Mart station (350 N. Wells St.) and Chicago station (300 W. Chicago Ave., at Franklin). Purple Line Express trains also stop at both stations during weekday rush periods.
Red Line: Grand station (521 N. State St., at Grand Avenue). The Red Line runs 24 hours a day.
One tip for Loop commuters: CTA has closed the State/Lake 'L' station for reconstruction into 2029. CTA suggests nearby Clark/Lake or Washington/Wabash instead. Check CTA's site or Train Tracker for current service before your first commute.
Groceries and Daily Life
Settling into a routine is easy because the basics are close by:
Jewel-Osco at 550 N. State St. (Ohio and State) is a full-service supermarket that also offers grocery pickup and delivery.
Trader Joe's River North at 44 E. Ontario St. is a good stop for quick meals and pantry staples.
Many of our River North buildings have their own fitness centers and pools, so you may not need a gym membership during your stay. Several also have on-site dog parks or dog runs. Many buildings welcome dogs and cats, but pet policies vary by building, so tell us about your pet when you inquire.
